T he distinction I use between hiking and backpacking is that hiking is something that can be done in one day while backpacking is a multi-day adventure.
Hiking is something you can do on a Saturday morning before you go to an afternoon wedding or something you can do after after work to unwind. For me a decent hike ranges between 5-10km but I’ve done 20-25km single day hikes that have left me pretty wiped but with a feeling of accomplishment.
So what do you need to do this?
- A decent pair of hiking shoes/boots
- small daypack (10-30 liters)
- Essentials (water, food, repellent, sunscreen, small first aid kit and maybe a bathing suit)
I often use my mountain bike as a means to explore the local area for hiking trails so I can come back later and explore them on foot. Most people don’t realize how close trails are to their homes and with a little exploring, you can find some pretty amazing trails.
Explore and enjoy!
